Results

11% of the steelmaker’s employees of 7,000 are women, up from about 8% two years ago and higher than the typical female headcount of 3-8%

Goal

The women headcount in manufacturing jobs is relatively low owing to various notions about how unfit/unsettling it would be for women in this sector. Tata Steel wants to debunk this myth and exhibit the power, it can wield with women employment.

Action

To attract female talent, especially in technical fields, a year ago Tata Steel launched an initiative called ‘Women of Mettle’—a scholarship scheme to induct woman engineers into the manufacturing sector. The programme is open to female students from engineering colleges like IITs and NITs. The top 10 candidates are given pre-placement offers. The company has special incentives for hiring partners for every successful female hire. It has annual female recruitment targets to have desired representation across levels.

Takeaway

Incentivizing is always a wonder drug for companies and never stops to give back to its executors. Tata Steel was able to break the glass of notions which was clouding the manufacturing arena for years. The outcome speaks of itself and also leaves a simple, yet powerful learning curve for companies who want to challenge the status-quo and set new cornerstones. If your company is still thriving to maintain inclusion in your workforce, the Tata Steel way can be your real guiding light.
